2016 Tracy 1st Inter-Tribal Pow Wow

On August 27, 2016 we went to the 1st Inter-Tribal Pow Wow in Tracy, California. It was held in Lincoln Park. We learned just before the opening ceremony that being called Native Americans is offensive! Apparently some guy named Christopher Columbus named the people he came into contact with Native Americans.  They prefer to be labeled indigenous people.

adjective in·dig·e·nous \in-ˈdi-jə-nəs\

Popularity: Top 1% of lookups

Simple Definition of indigenous

  • : produced, living, or existing naturally in a particular region or environment

However they really like to be just called by their name with reference of their tribe.

There was a strong sense of pride with all of the people involved in this event. There was a sense of honor between the different tribes sharing the same circle during the different dances. There was respect shown to the elders.

Since this was the 1st Inter-Tribal Pow Wow in Tracy it was kind of a small event. Even though some people came from great distances away.  I am sure as the years pass it will become a larger event.

Here are some pictures that we took during the pow wow. It was a beautiful sunny day of 85 degrees during the event. Maybe next year it will be a little cooler in temperature.
